Reverend Alisa Lasater Wailoo
Capitol Hill United Methodist Church
Washington, DC
Date of Prayer: 10/27/2020
Opening Prayer Given by the Guest Chaplain:
God of us all, we give You thanks for each person working in these Halls and the sacrifices they make. Bless our Members, staffers, clerks, custodians, and all those weary on the campaign trail.
May we be humbled by this awesome task of lawgiving. Kindle in us the spirit of Moses––the first lawgiver pictured in this very Chamber. As a
baby, Lord, You know he nearly lost his life because of an abuse of power. Save us when we fall into the folly of Pharaoh, worrying more about our own rights than those we are to protect and serve.
Then Moses, as a common laborer and murderer, was called by You. Help us see the gifts of each person we encounter in our work today, especially those with whom we disagree.
At that burning bush, You told Moses You heard the cries of Your people. Help us listen to Your children in need from communities overwhelmed by the coronavirus to counties facing fires and floods. Give us the compassion, courage, and wisdom to offer real help and hope.
Amen and amen.
